How Does Michigan Vehicle Shipping Work?
The Michigan car shipping process is the same as in any other state. Our online auto shipping quote calculator, and/or customer support shipping experts, will ask you straight away what type of vehicle you are transporting, and both the origination and destination city, state, zip codes for your route.
You are asked if your vehicle is operational, in other words, does it run? Because inoperable vehicles are more difficult and raise the average cost to ship. And finally, do you want to ship your car in the most popular Open Carrier method, or do you prefer the more expensive Enclosed Carrier service that luxury cars receive?
Ready To Provide A Best Price To Ship A Car
Once that core information is gathered, our cost calculator provides three quotes for Standard, Expedited and Rush service. You decide the best price option for your auto shipping needs and budget.
Soon after, your vehicle is then assigned to a door-to-door delivery carrier and loaded onto one of our Open Car Transports, or if you chose another type of transport, Enclosed. When your vehicle reaches the drop off location, you will walk around it with the car transporter to complete the vehicle inspection report.
How Many Hours Can Michigan Truck Drivers Work?
Here is a good rule of thumb when it comes to figuring out how many transit days your vehicle might be on the road. First, keep in mind there are strict Department of Transportation rules on how long an auto transporter driver may work in any given day, and how many days he may work before he MUST rest. Those rules are in place to protect both the public and the driver as well.
One key DOT rule is that a cross-country driver may not be on the road more than 11 hours after a 10 hour rest, and must take a 30 minute break after 8 hours. It is possible but never-the-less difficult for a vehicle transportation driver to cover 600 miles in a day, and according to Schneider, most Michigan truck drivers average closer to 500 miles.
Michigan Car Transport Types of Service
There are three main car transport service types.
Open Transport Carrier
There are two primary advantages of Open Transport Carrier, and they deal with the most important considerations for customers:
-
Car Shipping Cost. Open Transport is unquestionably the most affordable way to ship a car. Because the carrier can fit more cars per transport, the cost per vehicle goes down.
-
Speed. Because Open Transport is much more common, getting assigned to a carrier and having your vehicle picked up and delivered to its destination can happen faster.
Enclosed Transport Carrier
With Enclosed Transport Carriers, your car shipment arrives mostly clean – hardly dirty at all from the road. No debris or rocks get kicked up. Hail, sleet, and snow, should not touch your Enclosed Transport vehicle. Luxury or classic cars usually ship Enclosed.
The debris from hurricanes, tornadoes, and blizzards should not touch your Enclosed vehicle unless a direct hit calamity to the entire rig. Chances are far lower that there will be an insurance claim with Enclosed Shipping. It is low regardless even with Open Transport.
Specialty Vehicle Shipping
Some orders include boats, heavy construction/farming trucks, RVs, and motorcycles. They require Specialty Vehicle Shipping carriers, which often use extra large flatbed trucks to haul the load. It is usually a custom quote.

Michigan Car Shipping Company Advice
How To Prepare for Car Shipping Service
Before transporting your vehicle, there are several things you can do to prepare for car shipping service.
Clean Your Vehicle
Be sure to clean your vehicle thoroughly, both inside and out. That will help to identify any pre-existing damage.
Remove Personal Items
Be sure to remove any personal items inside your vehicle. Most auto transport companies discourage any personal items inside the vehicle. They are mindful of the weight extra items add. Some carrier drivers will allow up to 100 lbs confined to the trunk or otherwise out of sight. But ask first.
Disable Alarms
Disable car-alarms, and anti-theft devices inside the vehicle.
Remove Toll Tag Transponders
The highway and bridge tolls might trigger your toll transponder and charge your account. Take it easy on your credit card, remember to hide the transponders or remove them from your vehicle.
Take Photos Documenting Your Vehicle Condition
Photos documenting your vehicle condition, before handing it over to the car delivery driver, may make proving an incident much easier later. A picture is worth a thousand words.
Reduce Gas Tank to 1/4 Full
Reduce your gas tank to about 1/4 full, or no more than half a tank. Once again, weight is the car delivery driver’s concern and gasoline is heavy.
Saving Money Tips For Michigan Auto Shipping
Everybody wants to save money and find cheap auto transport. Here are some handy tips and suggestions.
Ship Your Car During The Off-Peak Seasons
The cheapest vehicle shipping rates happen during the slowest four months in the auto transport industry. February and March are typically slow months in which car shipping rates tend to be discounted. It happens again in Autumn, during October and November. A good tip is to ship a car anytime during those four months.
Meet The Automobile Shipping Service In The Nearest Big City
It is more expensive for a car shipping carrier to travel out of his way to a rural community. You can save money if willing to meet in the nearest big city, where the carrier is more likely to be picking up other vehicles.
Ship Open Transport Carrier
Open-Air Carrier is roughly 33% cheaper than Enclosed Carrier. If possible, choose the less expensive method to save money.
Snowbird Seasonal Fluctuations – Reverse Route
The best time for cheap car shipping service might be during the snowbird season on the reverse routes. The savings can be enormous.
Ranking Michigan Cities – Larger Helps To Ship A Car Faster
It should come as no surprise that it is far easier to amalgamate full truckloads and ship vehicles from larger cities. The below list of Michigan cities is a fairly good barometer of how fast you might be assigned a carrier to transport your vehicle. The larger the population, the higher the chances for fast pickup and delivery.

Michigan Car Transport FAQ’s
Getting a car shipping quote is easy. Use our instant online auto transport cost calculator or call (800) 600-3750 to speak with a pricing expert. To provide an accurate estimate, we’ll need the pickup and delivery locations, vehicle type, method of transport, operational condition and your shipping availability date.
To save money, consider choosing open auto transport instead of enclosed. Flexibility with your pickup date, meeting the driver near a major highway, and avoiding peak seasons can also help cut costs. Check out our car shipping tips for more money-saving strategies.
We accept all major credit cards, postal money orders, and electronic payments. If you choose to pay the remaining balance upon delivery, cash, or postal money order are accepted.
To prepare your vehicle for shipping, make sure it is clean so that any pre-existing damage is visible. Remove all personal belongings and valuables, detach toll passes, and disable alarm systems to prevent complications. Leave about a quarter tank of gas—enough for loading and unloading but not excessive.
Yes, Direct Express Auto Transport allows you to place two pieces of luggage—such as a box, bag, or suitcase—up to 100 lbs. total in the trunk at no additional cost. Some carriers take exception to that, but we won’t use them to transport our customer vehicles.
If the personal items are in excess of 100 lbs., some carriers will accept a small fee ($100-$300) to take the additional weight.
Some carriers may be concerned about making it through the highway weight scales and deny extra items.
Yes, your vehicle is protected during transit. The carrier’s cargo insurance provides coverage, usually up to $250,000. However, it is recommended to maintain your own car insurance as backup.
Car shipping costs vary based on distance, vehicle size and weight, transport type (open or enclosed), seasonal demand, fuel prices, and any extra services like door-to-door delivery. For an accurate quote, consider using our online calculator or contacting our team directly at (800) 600-3750.
Transit times are typically based on mileage—about one day for every 500 miles. For example, a 1,000-mile journey usually takes around 2-3 days. Double that for 2,000 mile routes. Triple it for 3,000 mile transits. Visit our estimated delivery timeline page for more details.
Shipping time depends on the delivery distance and type of transport selected. On average, car shipments within the U.S. take a few days to two weeks. The process includes vehicle pickup, transit, and delivery. Contact us for a customized time estimate.
Yes. An adult (18 or older) must be available at both pickup and drop-off to provide the keys, sign inspection reports, and release or receive the vehicle.
In most cases, we offer door-to-door service. If local regulations or physical obstacles (like tight streets or low-hanging trees) prevent access, the driver will arrange to meet you at a nearby open area—typically a large parking lot or store.
The car transport carriers are often huge trucks, and they need plenty of room to navigate. That is primarily why the drivers choose to meet nearby, which is in the spirit of door-to-door delivery.
Absolutely. We can transport inoperable vehicles, but please indicate this during booking. Additional shipping costs normally apply. If your vehicle cannot roll, brake, or steer, specialized equipment and labor will be required, which may result in extra charges.
One good reason to ship a car Open Transport is that it is about 33% cheaper than Enclosed Transport. Another practical reason is that there are almost 30 times more Open carriers on the road, and the chances of getting assigned faster increases, especially in remote locations.
